Thomas Fischer Weiss is an American electrical engineering educator and biophysicist. He is also a writer and contributor to scientific books, articles and journals.
Background
Thomas Fischer Weiss was born on October 17, 1934, in Prague, Czechoslovakia (nowadays the Czech Republic). He is a son of Eugene Weiss and Erna (Frenkel) Weiss. His family moved to the United States in 1941, and Thomas became a naturalized citizen.
Education
Weiss received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree from the City College of New York in 1956. He became a Master of Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1959. Four years later he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree.
Weiss started his career at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), taking a position of a research assistant in Dynamic Analysis and Control Laboratory for a year from 1956. That same year he became an engineer at Douglas Aircraft Company. For six years from 1957, he served at Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a research assistant at Research Laboratory of Electronics, working also as a consultant to Lincoln Laboratory from 1961 till 1965, rising to an assistant professor from 1963 to 1968. For ten years from 1968, Weiss worked as an associate professor, finally becoming a professor of electrical engineering and computer science in 1978. He was also a Thomas and Gerd Perkins Professor of Electrical and Bioelectrical Engineering from 1992 till 1997.
Weiss was a research associate in preventive medicine at Harvard University, for five years from 1964, also working as an instructor there from 1969 till 1974.
