Ratner was born on December 21, 1953 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States; the daughter of William A. Ratner and Marcia Stahl Ratner.
Ratner received a Bachelor of Science degree from Brown University in 1975. Seven years later she earned her Doctor of Philosophy degree from Indiana University.
Ratner began her career as an assistant professor and then a professor of cell biology, neurobiology and anatomy at the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center in 1984 and held it for twenty years. Since 2004 she has been a professor of the department of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center of the University of Cincinnati.
Also Nancy has served as a program leader for Cancer Biology and Neural Tumors Program in the Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute where she holds the Beatrice C. Lampkin Endowed chair in cancer biology and serves as PI of the NINDS P50 "Cincinnati Center in NF Research".
Ratner was a member of American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society for Cell Biology, American Association for Cancer Research. She was a member of the advisory board for the National Neurofibromatosis Foundation (nowadays Children’s Tumor Foundation) from 1989 to 2007. Nancy chaired the Department of Defense Neurofibromatosis Research Program Integration Panel in 2008. She serves as a member of the James McDonnell Brain Tumor Research Advisory Board.
On November 26, 1982 Nancy Ratner married Arthur Thomas Sturbaum. They have 2 children.
