(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Excerpt from Coleoptera Atlantidum: Being an Enumeration ...)
Excerpt from Coleoptera Atlantidum: Being an Enumeration of the Coleopterous Insects of the Madeiras, Salvages, and Canaries Considering that scarcely more than a year has elapsed since the publication (by the Trustees of the British Museum) of my volume on the Coleopterous insects of the Canaries, I should have been content to let the subject rest for awhile, had not the recent arrival of fresh material from those islands demanded my immediate attention. The material alluded to is the result of the late researches of the Messrs. Crotch; and it is so extensive and important, that I felt it would not be possible to do it complete justice without a thorough revision of the entire catalogue into which the new species would have to be incorporated. With this somewhat tedious prospect before me, I began to consider whether it might not be desirable to take the opportunity of comparing critically, at the same time, inter se, all the Coleoptera which have hitherto been detected in those Atlantic Groups; for the Madeiran fauna had been steadily increasing since the appearance (in 1857) of my Madeiran Catalogue, and even the little rocks of the Salvages - so remote, and difficult of access-had been adding their quota to the general list. (Leopold is delighted to publish this classic book as part...)
Leopold is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. This means that we have checked every single page in every title, making it highly unlikely that any material imperfections – such as poor picture quality, blurred or missing text - remain. When our staff observed such imperfections in the original work, these have either been repaired, or the title has been excluded from the Leopold Classic Library catalogue. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, within the book we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. BtOLOCV TI do not enter so far into the province of the logicians as to take notice of the difference there is between the analytic and synthetic methods of coming at truth, or proving it; whether it is better to begin the disquisition from the subject, or from the attribute. If by the use of proper media anything can be showed to be, or not to be, I care not from what term the demonstration or argument takes its rise. Either way propositions may beget their like, and more truth be brought into the world. Religion of Nature Delineated, p. 45 (A.D. 1722). PRINTED BY TAYLOR AND FRANCIS, RED LION COURT, FLEET STREET. Thomas Vernon Wollaston was born in Scotter, Lincolnshire, England, in 1822.
Wollaston supported the theory that continental lands had once extended outward farther to encompass some of the island groups he studied.
He was well-placed socially. In 1845 he gained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Jesus College, Cambridge, and in 1847 he was made a fellow of the Linnean Society. Wollaston spent the winter of 1847-1848 in Madeira, returning for his Cambridge Master of Arts graduation in 1849.
In the years to 1855 he made four long trips to Madeira.
In that year the British Museum purchased his Madeiran collection of Coleoptera. They are now in the Natural History Museum.
In 1857 Wollaston returned to the North Atlantic islands, investigating the natural history of the Canary Islands - with Richard Thomas Lowe and John Edward Gray in 1858, returning with Lowe alone in 1859. After a long and rather mysterious absence he returned to the islands in 1866, this time to Cape Verde Islands with Lowe and Gray.
Wollaston was a frequent correspondent with the geologist Charles Lyell and their letters are in the Centre for Research Collections, Edinburgh University Library.
Wollaston was also a friendly correspondent with Charles Darwin until 1860. Wollaston died at Teignmouth, Devon, England, in 1878.
