Thomas David Porett was born on October 17, 1942, in Lagos, Nigeria.
Thomas Porett received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1964 and a Master of Science in Photography from the Institute of Design of Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, in 1966. He also studied synthesizer techniques and electronic music composition at Philadelphia Musical Academy (now the University of the Arts (UArts)) and attended an intensive workshop in holography at Lake Forest College in Illinois.
Since 1966 Thomas Porett has taught at the Philadelphia College of Art (the University of the Arts (UArts)). Previously he taught at Moore College of Art (now Moore College of Art and Design) in Philadelphia from 1967 to 1970 and at Quetico Centre in Ontario, Canada, in the spring of 1970 and summer of 1969. He was also the creator of a film entitled Jesusday (1969), commissioned by WCAU-TV and CBS in Philadelphia.
