Later chapters explore Kolmogorov complexity, channel capacity, differential entropy, the capacity of the fundamental Gaussian channel, the relationship between information theory and statistics, rate distortion and network information theories. The final two chapters examine the stock market and inequalities in information theory. In many cases the authors actually describe the properties of the solutions before the presented problems.

Bachelor of Science in Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1960. Master of Science in Electrical engineer, Stanford University, 1961. Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical engineer, Stanford University, 1964.
He devoted almost his entire career to developing the relationship between information theory and statistics. Cover was past President of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Information Theory Society and was a Fellow of the Institute for Mathematical Statistics and of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. During his 48-year career as a professor of Electrical Engineering and Statistics at Stanford University, he graduated 64 Doctor of Philosophy students, authored over 120 journal papers in learning, information theory, statistical complexity, and portfolio theory. And he coauthored the book Elements of Information Theory, which has become the most widely used textbook as an introduction to the topic since the publication of its first edition in 1991.
He was also coeditor of the book Open Problems in Communication and Computation.
