Thomas Groth was born on April 21, 1956 in Berlin, Germany; the son of Arthur and Elisabeth (Rzepka) Groth.

Groth earned his Master of Science degree in 1985 and a Ph.D. in 1991 from Humboldt University of Berlin. He worked there from 1985 to 1993.

Groth earned his Master of Science degree from the Humboldt University of Berlin in 1985. Six years later he was given a Ph.D. from the same university. In 2003, Thomas received a Doctor of Science degree from the University of Potsdam.
Groth began his career as a research assistant at the Humboldt University of Berlin in 1985. Eight years later he took the position of a senior researcher at Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht Centre for Materials and Coastal Research.
Then in 2003, Thomas became Deputy Head and Head of Biomaterials Department at GKSS Research Center of the Institute of Chemistry. Since 2004 Thomas has been a professor at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg.
Throughout his career, he was also a visiting scientist at the University of Sofia, Bulgaria, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Sofia, University of Patras, Greece and Technical University of Aachen, Germany.
Groth was a board member and deputy secretary-general of the European Society for Artificial Organs from 2011 to 2014 and its president in 2015-2017. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of The International Federation for Artificial Organs, European Society for Biomaterials, German Society for Biomaterials and International Society for Artificial Organs.
On May 29, 1991 Thomas Groth married Karin Kricheldorff. They have two children.
