(Reveals a profound understanding of evolutionary biology,...)
Reveals a profound understanding of evolutionary biology, and an excellent up-to-date knowledge of human evolution studies. It is not only very well done, but...it is written from a novel point of view. It needs to be very widely read and I hope that it will be. Megarry is doing his subject a great service. --Bernard Campbell University of California Social scientists have tended to neglect prehistory in their approach to human societies. Tim Megarry's lucid and authoritative book remedies this neglect. It will be of great value to students of anthropology, psychology, and sociology. --Paul HirstBirkbeck College, University of London Stressing the importance of culture as a formative agent in the evolutionary emergence of modern humans, Society in Prehistory provides an impressive, interdisciplinary, and deeply informed survey of prehistory. Individual chapters focus on culture and evolution; biology and culture; primate societies; the first hominids; tools and culture; the economics of foraging; modern humans and human behavior; sex and the division of labor; and sexuality and social life. The book reveals that, while social behavior is biologically grounded, it is not biologically determined.

Tim McGarry was born on May 17, 1941, in London, United Kingdom. He is the son of Bill Megarry, a film editor, and Peggy (Harris) Megarry, a secretary.
McGarry attended Westham College of Technology (now University of East London), for three years from 1966. He then graduated from University of London with honors, with Bachelor of Science degree in 1969. McGarry finally earned his Master of Arts degree from London School of Oriental and African Studies in 1970.
Megarry's career began in 1972 at the University of Greenwich in London. He was appointed as a senior lecturer in sociology and anthropology there. Teaching comparative sociology has given Megarry the opportunity to investigate a variety of societies and behavior that he explored in greater depth. Now he continues his teaching in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Greenwich.
Megarry was editor and author of the introduction of the book From the Caves to Capital: Readings in Historical and Comparative in 1995. That same year he also edited and wrote the introduction to the book The Making of Modern Japan. Megarry is the author of Society in Prehistory: The Origins of Human Culture. He also discovered Darwin's theories, and became joined to a lifelong interest in natural history, earth sciences, evolution, and human cultural origins.

1995A most basic Megarry's motivation for writing is the desire to produce books in order to gain a more profound understanding of questions which have become longterm interests and to communicate their intrinsic excitement. Research and writing is a ‘working-out process, in which Megarry attempts to integrate material and ideas that are presented in a range of academic domains. He is particularly concerned to work on interdisciplinary areas that unite historical, biological and anthropological aspects of the social sciences and humanities. While he recognizes the value of research produced in specialist fields, his desire is to produce work that overlaps current subject boundaries and attempts to provide a comprehensive theoretical overview of large-scale issues.
Megarry is a member of the Zoological Society of London.
Megarry married Lady Henrietta Paget on February 16, 1980. The marriage produced 2 children - Katy and Matty.
