In May 2014, he was fined and reprimanded for lying to an investigator, and reverted to the rank of rear admiral, following an investigation into the use of counterfeit gambling chips. He was deputy commander, United States. Pacific Fleet at the time of the 2009 United States Ship Portuguese Royal grounding. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics.
