In 1872, he became interpreter for an American physician at the Juzen Hospital in Yokohama and studied medicine there. After graduation from the Medical Department, Tokyo University (1881),he was appointed professor at the Okayama and Kanazawa medical colleges and director of their attached hospitals. Studied in Europe (1885-89). After returning to Japan, he was appointed an official of the 110me Ministry and became director of the Tokyo Hygienic Experiment Station (1890). After leaving Kovernment service, he set up the Kaisei Hospital in Kojimachi, Tokyo. He compiled a Diography of his father.
