Graduated from the Leningrad Cinema Engineers Institute, worked as a sound recordist at the Kirghiz Film Studios.
The first Kirghiz film director. In 1964, joined the Directors Course at the Mosfilm Studio. Worked in 1964 on Shepitko’s Heat, which is now considered a classic.
His first feature film The Sky of Our Childhood shot in Kirghizia, 1967, won a prize at the Frankfurt Film Festival. The Ferocious One, scripted in collaboration with Andron Mikhalkov-Konchalovskii in 1973, became internationally known. Other films: Horses (Kirghizfilm, 1965, direction, soundwork), The Inheritance (Kirghizfilm, 1970), Pay Tribute to the Fire (Kirghizfilm, 1972), The Red Apple (Kirghizfilm, 1975), Uhlan (Kirghizfilm, 1977).
Winner of the Toktogul Prize in 1973.
