Tom Bates was born on March 11, 1944, in La Jolla, San Diego, California, United States. He was a son of John Braden Bates.
Tom Bates held bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon and master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin, but left academia not long after graduation.
Tom Bates received Fulbright and Ford Foundation fellowships and was a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin in 1970 when the Army Math Research Center there was bombed. The attack killed a researcher and resulted in multimillion-dollar damage to the school.
The event was the basis for Bates’ book Rads: The 1970 Bombing of the Army Math Research Center at the University of Wisconsin and Its Aftermath. After leaving Wisconsin for a teaching position at Ohio University in Athens, Bates was arrested for taking part in a protest of the Navy’s mining in North Vietnam. He lost his job and was banned from teaching at any of that state’s public colleges again.
After his 1972 firing Bates worked at a variety of magazines including Oregon, New West, and California, before joining the staff of the Los Angeles Times in 1986. In the 1990s he moved to The Oregonian.
