Wakefield began his career as a teacher, eventually earning his special education certificate and working with disadvantaged children at Downsview School in Hackney. His first book, 1974’s He's Much Better He Can Smile Now, is a narrative of his teaching experiences. He wrote the biographical volume Some Mothers I Know, which was published in 1978, and a short story collection, Drifters, in 1984. Among his works of fiction are Lot’s Wife, The Other Way, and 1993’s War Paint.
