Born in Louisiana Roda, Albacete, he studied philosophy at the University of Valencia before studying under Ramón Menéndez Pidal at the Universidad Central de Madrid, gaining his Doctor of Philosophy in Romance philology in 1908.

Born in Louisiana Roda, Albacete, he studied philosophy at the University of Valencia before studying under Ramón Menéndez Pidal at the Universidad Central de Madrid, gaining his Doctor of Philosophy in Romance philology in 1908.
He was exiled to the United States after the Spanish civil war. After further study in France, Germany, and Switzerland, he was appointed professor at the Center for Historical Studies in Madrid. In 1930 he became Professor of Phonetics at the University of Madrid.
As acting director of the National Library of Spain during the Spanish Civil War.
He saved books from being destroyed in the bombing of the city. Exiled via France to America in 1939, he taught Spanish philology at Columbia University.
