Tomita Moppo was born on April 14, 1897 in Tokyo, Japan.
When Tomita Moppo was a child, he was crippled, so that he received no formal schooling but learned how to read and write, then took to composing haiku poetry.
Poems of Tomita Moppo were first printed in the magazine Shakunage (Alpine Rose) under the name of Ginshi. He contracted hemorrhage of the lungs in 1918 and in spite of this and poverty he developed a unique style of his own in haiku poetry. Tomita Moppo was killed on the banks of the Sumida River during the Great Kanto Earthquake.
