Toranosuke Shimada was born in 1810. His father was Shimada Chikafusa.

As a boy, he was trained in the Itto (one sword) school and toured Kyushu to improve his swordsmanship. He studied Kashima Shinden Jikishinkage-ryū kenjutsu under Otani Nobutomo and zazen meditation under Sengai. He was also a student of Kitō-ryū jujutsu.
He went to Edo and was trained by Seiichiro Otani and traveled in various provinces to meet other swordsmen. In the Tempo Era (1830-1844), he was renowned as a great swordsman like his master Otani, and Susumu oishi.
Toranosuke Shimada was of opinion that the spirit of Confucianism was the same as that of swordsmanship.
