Torataro Kikuchi originally practiced medicine at Edo and adopted Western methods, but was imprisoned when he hatched a political plot together with Koshiro Fujita at mount Tsukuba (1864). Released from prison the following year Torataro Kikuchi proceeded to Ezo (Hokkaido), and began practicing there. Rejoining his clan he took to military affairs (1868), and later became a merchant trading in silk and tea (1871). Changing his occupation once again, Torataro Kikuchi took to farming at Ogasawara Island and encouraged the cultivation of sugar cane (1887).
