Toshiaki Kirino was born in Kagoshima Prefecture. Original personal name: Hanjiro Nakamura.
Toshiaki Kirino followed Hisamitsu Shimazu to Kyoto and joined the army of Takamori Saig, and distinguished himself during the battles of Toba-Fushimi and again in the expedition to Ou (1868). Three years later when the Imperial Court organized Imperial guards from various clans, Toshiaki Kirino led his clansmen to Tokyo and was appointed major-general. He fell into disfavor, however, when he opposed the expedition to Korea (1873) and later with Takamori Saigo declared open revolt against the Government (1877). Their rebellion was crushed and he committed suicide.
