He studied at Kyoritsu School.
Joined the Asahi Shimbun in 1888 and wrote novels for the newspaper. Ichiyo Higuchi, noted woman novelist, once was his disciple. He wrote altogether more than 300 novels and stories. Fond of popular Japanese music and songs, he also wrote many songs.
