After attending middle school in Miyagi Prefecture, became assistant at Sendai Medical College (1902) and continued further studies as apprentice at a drugstore.
Totaro Shimizu operated the Heiando Drugstore from 1909 and received degree in pharmacology for his studies in pharmacological history of Japan (1929) and became professor of Toho University. He received Blue Ribbon Medal (1951).
His works include "The Pharmacological History of Japan," "Chinese Pharmacology" and "Business Management of Drugstores."
