He graduated from Law Course of Tokyo University in 1905.
He served in the Department of the Imperial Household as a secretary but left his post in 1919.
He studied under Soseki Natsume and joined the editorial staff of the Hototogisu (Cuckoo) haiku magazine.
With Dakotsu Iida and Bou Kubota, started a resistance movement against the then prevailing “neo-tendency.”
His works are influenced by Basho's style.
He was a member of the Japan Academy of Art.
He was elected member of the Japan Art Academy in 1953.
