Traugott Gerber was a German medic and botanist, director of the Moscow Physic Garden. The author of an unpublished manuscript (1741) «Flora tanaiensis per provinciam Woronesch et Taurow, ad Tanain majorem, item per tractum Belogrodiense ad Tanain minorem, cum locis natalibus».
Background
Traugott Gerber was born on 1709 in Lausitz (Germany). He was baptised on January 16, 1710 in Zodel, Oberlausitz. His father, Johan George, was a lutheran priest at the church in Zodel. Unfortunately he died just 16 weeks prior to the birth of his son.
Education
Very little is known about the childhood and youth of Traugott. He probably visited the Gymnasium in Goerlitz and passed his matric. On April 29, 1730, he registered for studies of medicine at the university of Leipzig. In 1735 was graduated from the university of Leipzig.
Career
Was working as a caretaker of Moscow Physic Garden till 1742. In 1738-1739 taught anatomy at the Moscow hospital school. He journeyed to the Volga River and to the land of the Don Cossacks to study medical herbs. He was the first who had studied the flora of the Voronezh province.
