Tsugunosuke Kawai was born in 1827.
After studying under Bankei Otsuki he was appointed one of the advisers to the Chief of the Clan (1867). The following year when the Boshin-no-eki (civil war prior to Meiji Restoration) broke out Tsugunosuke Kawai advised the Clan Lord to remain neutral, and had a petition sent to the Imperial Court begging that the Shogun be spared. The petition was rejected which infuriated the Chief of Nagaoka Clan who, marshaling all the clans belonging to Hokuetsu district, rose in revolt against the Imperial Army. During the battle at Nagaoka Castle, Kawai was wounded and taken prisoner. As punishment his family was declared extinct, but after his death his son was allowed to continue the line.
