Tsutomu Miyano is a Japanese lawyer and partner at Anderson Mori & Tomotsune in Tokyo, known for corporate, M&A, and international finance work. He was admitted to the Japanese bar in 1988 after training at the Legal Training and Research Institute of the Supreme Court, and he has also taught at Chuo University Law School.
Background
Miyano's documented background is rooted in Japanese legal education and training. He received a Bachelor of Laws from Tokyo University in March 1986.
In Japan, lawyers must complete paid, full-time training at the Legal Training and Research Institute after passing the bar examination. This requirement formed the next stage of Miyano's legal preparation before he entered practice.
Education
Miyano received a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from Tokyo University, with the degree dated March 1986.
He completed the 40th class of the Supreme Court's training program in April 1988 and was admitted to the bar that year. The Legal Training and Research Institute was established in May 1947 as a training facility affiliated with the Supreme Court, responsible for training judges and legal apprentices. Its training of legal apprentices was designed to prepare future legal professionals with practical skills and professional ethical standards.
Miyano later studied at Harvard Law School, earning a Master of Laws (LL.M.) by June 1993.
Career
Miyano began his professional career at Tomotsune Kimura & Mitomi, joining the firm in April 1988 after completing his training at the Legal Training and Research Institute. The firm had been founded in 1967 and was known for its work in international financial transactions. It kept the name Tomotsune Kimura & Mitomi until 2001, when it became Tomotsune & Kimura.
In 1993 he worked for Bechtel Corporation and then at Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York from September 1993. Miyano returned to Tomotsune Kimura & Mitomi in September 1994 and was appointed a partner in January 1996.
In 2005 Tomotsune & Kimura merged with Anderson Mori to form Anderson Mori & Tomotsune. Anderson Mori had been founded in 1952 and had become known for serving overseas companies doing business in Japan. Miyano became a partner of the combined firm in January 2005 and continues in that role in its Tokyo office.
His practice covers general corporate matters, commercial transactions, M&A, labor issues, and international finance, including securities issuance. He also handles litigation and crisis management for corporate clients, and he has acted as regular counsel for medical device and pharmaceutical companies in Japan. His work includes matters in the telecommunications sector.
Alongside his law practice, Miyano taught at Chuo University Law School as an adjunct lecturer from 2005, a visiting lecturer from 2007, and a visiting professor from 2013. Chuo University was founded in 1885 as the English Law School in Tokyo, and its law school was established in 2004.
