Udhayanidhi Stalin was born on November 27, 1977, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. He is the son of Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin, Leader of opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, and his wife Durga Stalin. He also has a sister Senthamarai Stalin. His grandfather, Muthuvel Karunanidhi, also was a politician and served as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for almost two decades over five terms between 1969 and 2011. Several of his other relatives also have been actively involved in politics and Tamil cinema since the 1960s. His cousins Arulnithi and Dayanidhi Azhagiri are an actor and producer, respectively.

Stalin did his schooling in Don Bosco, and received his degree in Visual Communications at Loyola College in Chennai.
Stalin made his acting debut in the industry with a guest appearance in the 2009 film Aadhavan as a servant. His lead role debut came in 2012 with the Tamil romantic comedy movie Oru Kal Oru Kannadi, under the direction of M. Rajesh. He played the male lead of Saravanan opposite Hansika Motwani. He once again went on to do a guest role as a flat tenant in the 2013 movie Vanakkam Chennai. Director S. R. Prabhakaran's family drama Idhu Kathirvelan Kadhal saw him in the male lead Kathirvelan who falls in love with Pavithra, played by Nayanthara, but is hurt when he realizes that she loves someone else. The movie was critically praised for its simple love story along with the right amount of comedy and emotions.
In 2015, Stalin gave his next hit film Nannbenda, in which he was once again paired opposite Nayanthara, along with Santhanam in a comic role. Even though the movie was a hit, it garnered only average critical reviews who claimed the movie to be predictable, with no new comedy and a weak script. After working in romantic comedies and family drama films, the actor tried his hands at the action thriller genre with Gethu in 2016. Directed by Thirukumaran, the movie saw him play the son of a teacher who sets out on a quest to find out the real culprit behind a murder, which his father is falsely accused of. The movie opened to mixed reviews and was only an average success.
Stalin was seen in yet another new role of a struggling lawyer Sakthivel in the legal thriller film Manithan. The story revolves around Sakthi who challenges a wealthy man in a hit-and-run case, and wins the case, which establishes him as a successful lawyer. His 2017 release includes the action comedy film Saravanan Irukka Bayamaen, under the direction of Ezhil. Regina Cassandra starred as the female lead in the film, while Srushti Dange and Soori played supporting roles. In 2018 he played the role of Selvam in Nimir, and in 2019 he appeared in Kanne Kalaimaane as Kamala Kannan. His 2020 releases include Psycho and Kannai Nambathey.
Stalin has produced several movies like Kuruvi (2008), Aadhavan (2009), Manmadan Ambu (2010), 7aum Arivu (2011), Oru Kal Oru Kannadi (2012), Idhu Kathirvelan Kadhal (2014), Nannbenda (2015), Gethu (2016), and Manithan (2016). He is also the producer for his 2017 starrer Saravanan Irukka Bayamaen.

Stalin started his political life as Secretary of Youth Wing in Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on July 4th 2019. Before that, he campaigned all over Tamil Nadu in 2019 during Lok sabha Elections for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and its alliance parties.
“There were times he would participate in public functions of the party, but he always stood below the dais. He would never be found on the dais as he wanted to be one with the cadres,” said Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi. “Standing with the flag in hand, raising slogans just near the stage, he would ensure that people knew he was there as a DMK worker and not because of his lineage. Even if he was called on-stage, he would make his speech and go back down,” added Mahesh.
