Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelensky is a Ukranian actor, screenwriter, producer, lawyer, and politician. He is also the director of the studio "Kvartal 95." Zelensky is one of the leading candidates in the 2019 Ukrainian presidential election.
Background
Volodymyr Zelensky was born on January 25, 1978, in Kryvyi Rih, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union ( now Kryvyi Rih, Dnipropetrovsk region, Ukraine). He is the son of Oleksandr Zelensky and Rimma Zelenska. His father is a Professor and Head of the Department of Cybernetics and Computing Hardware at the Kryvyi Rih Institute of Economics. His mother used to work as an engineer. Before going to school he lived for four years in Mongolia in the city of Erdenet where his father worked.
Education
Volodymyr attended the gymnasium № 95 of Kryvyi Rih, where he was an activist and class leader. He loved sports, danced, participated in amateur panel games competitions. At the age of 16, he received a grant for free education in Israel, but his father was against it.
At school, Volodymyr dreamt of becoming a diplomat and even prepared for entrance MGIMO. However, he entered the Kiev National Economic University department in his native Kryvyi Rih, where he studied law. But he has never worked in this field except for two months of practice.
When being a student, Volodymyr Zelensky joined the local KVN team (a comedy competition) and was soon invited to join the united Ukrainian team "Zaporizhia-Kryvyi Rih-Transit" which performed in the KVN's Major League and eventually won in 1997. That same year, he and his friends created their own project "Kvartal 95," Zelensky being the leader of the project. Two years later, Russian showman Alexander Maslyakov invited the team to Moscow to participate in the Higher League of KVN. In 2003, "Kvartal 95" started producing TV shows for the Ukrainian TV channel 1+1.
Within the years of its existence studio "Kvartal 95" has been writing numerous plots and has been creating a lot of TV-shows. Being a co-author and one of the producers of the most of the projects, Volodymyr Zelensky was actively involved in film and TV-production. To add to that, he was participating in shows as an anchor and an actor.
"Kvartal 95" has created New Year musicals "Za dvumya zaytsami" ("Behind two rabbits"), "Tri mushketera" ("Three musketeers"); entertainment TV-shows and concerts "Boitsovskiy club" ("The Fight Club"), "Ukraina, Vstavay!" ("Rise, Ukraine!"), "Rassmeshy Komika" ("Make Comedian Laugh"), "Liga smeha" ("The laugh league"), and many others. "Kvartal 95" has filmed TV-films and series "Chudo" ("Miracle"), "Svaty" ("In-laws"), "Bayki Mitiaia" ("Mitiay’s tales"), and many others.
Their most successful project is TV-show "Vecherniy Kvartal" ("Kvartal in the evening"), which premiered at the largest national TV-channel "Inter" in 2005. Volodymyr Zelensky stood out as an author, creator, director and anchor of this TV-show. At this point "Vecherniy Kvartal" is the most popular show with the highest rating in Ukrainian media.
In 2006 Volodymyr participated in Ukrainian version of the show "Dancing with the stars." Partnering with Alena Shoptenko he won the first prize in the TV-project, leaving all other participants far behind.
In 2008 Zelensky starred in the feature film "Love in the Big City", and its sequel, "Love in the Big City 2". He continued his movie career with the film "Office Romance. Our Time" in 2011 and with "Rzhevsky Versus Napoleon" in 2012. "Love in the Big City 3" was released in January 2014. Zelensky also played the leading role in the 2012 film "8 First Dates" and in sequels which were produced in 2015 and 2016.
From 2010 to 2012 Zelensky was a member of the board and the general producer of the TV channel "Inter."
After the Ukrainian media reported that during the War in Donbass "Kvartal 95" had donated 1 million hryvnias to the Ukrainian army, Russian politicians and artists petitioned for a ban on Kvartal's works in Russia. Zelensky, however, spoke out against the intention of the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture to ban Russian artists from Ukraine. However, in 2015, Ukraine fulfilled its intention. In 2018, the romantic comedy Love in the Big City 2 starring Zelensky was also banned in Ukraine.
Zelensky became the star of the popular television series "Servant of the People," which premiered in October 2015. The show tells the story of a thirty-something high school history teacher who wins election to the presidency of Ukraine after a viral video shows him ranting against government corruption in Ukraine.
The political party Servant of the People was officially registered at the Ministry of Justice on 31 March 2018. The party's leader is "Kvartal 95" lawyer Ivan Bakanov. At the time "Kvartal 95" created the party, they claimed it was important to do so to prevent others from stealing the name of the eponymous series for "cynical political purposes".
Zelensky's first role in the Ukrainian language was the romantic comedy "I, You, He, She", which appeared on the screens of Ukraine at the end of 2018.
Volodymyr Zelensky announced his candidacy for the 2019 Ukrainian Presidential Election on 31 December 2018. The team of political advisers of Zelensky includes former Finance Minister Oleksandr Danylyuk, former Economic Development and Trade minister Aivaras Abromavicius, and anti-corruption campaigner Sergii Leshchenko. During the election campaign Zelensky continued to tour with "Kvartal 95."

In his interview with Der Spiegel, Zelensky told that he went into politics to restore trust in politicians and that he wanted "to bring professional, decent people to power" and "would really like to change the mood and timbre of the political establishment, as much as possible."
During his presidential campaign, Zelensky stated that Ukraine should set the goal to apply for a NATO Membership Action Plan in 2024. His program also states that he "will do everything to ensure" that Ukraine can apply for European Union membership in 2024. Zelensky promised that his first bill "On People's Power" will provide a mechanism for referendums. He also promised bills to fight corruption, including removal of immunity from the president of the country, members of the Verkhovna Rada (the Ukrainian parliament) and judges, a law about impeachment, reform of election laws, and providing efficient trial by jury.
Zelensky stated that as President he would try to end the ongoing War in Donbass by negotiating with Russia. Regarding the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea, Zelensky said that, speaking realistically, it would be possible to return Crimea under Ukrainian control only after a regime change in Russia. He has also come out against targeting the Russian language in Ukraine and the banning of artists for their political opinions.

Zelensky is a film junkie. He has watched probably all the most iconic films in the history of the world cinema. He is also a workaholic who constantly supports his colleagues providing them with creative spirit and energy.
