During the chaotic period of the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Ue Sanetake encouraged his fellow musicians to stand by their professions and traditions and managed to keep them in the Court. Later, in 1872, he was appointed a superintendent of classical music in Kyoto. The following year, in 1873, Sanetake was commissioned to select tunes of classical music for the Court. He resigned in 1877.
