Mack studied at Hochschule fiir Bildende Kunste in Hamburg, Germany under A. Mahlau (graphic arts), and later studied photography under E. T. Roeger.
From 1963 to 1966 Ulrich was a staff photographer at Quick in Munich, Germany. In two years he worked as a staff photographer at Stern magazine. He held this position until 1971. From 1971 to 1975 he was a freelanced. Since 1975 Ulrich is a teacher of photography at Fachhochschule in Dortmund, Germany.
Ulrich has made television films for Norddeutscher Rundfunk in Hamburg, Germany on fencing and polevaulting. Using Polaroid positive, negative film in all formats, but mainly 8 x 10, he has recorded images of the small German island of Pellworm, since 1970.
