Studied in Tokyo Semmon Gakko (predecessor of Waseda University) and earned a doctorate in philosophy in Germany.
After graduating from Tokyo Semmon Gakko (predecessor of Waseda University) became lecturer there (1894), but left later for further studies at Germany, where he earned a doctorate in philosophy.
Returning home was appointed professor at Waseda University, and made a director of the university.
Was the first director of the dramatic museum built to the memory of Shoyo Tsubouchi.
