Taguchi Unzo was born on May 1, 1892 in Niigata, Japan.
Taguchi graduated from Second Higher School. Then he attempted to stow away to Europe, but the ship on which he was sailing was torpedoed by a German submarrne near Gibraltar and he was put into jail in 1914. He was released in 1915 and sent to London from where he crossed over to New York and was able to attend a school through the good offices of Sen Katayama, a Commumst.
After finishing school he went to Russia in 1921 to attend the 3rd session of the Comintern and then helped in organizing Communists in the Irkutsk District. He accompanied the Soviet diplomat Joffe as secretary to Shanghai in 1923.
After returning to Japan Taguchi served as an interpreter in the negotiations for the Soviet-Japanese Commercial Treaty held in Shanghai between Shimpei Goto and Joffe.
He was a prolific writer and apart from contributing regularly to the Kaizo (Reformation) and Bungei Sensen (Literary Front) magazines he wrote several books among which were Akai Hiroba-o Yokogiru (Crossing the Red Square) and Alcahata-no Nabikii Tocoro (Where the Red Flag Flutters).
