Urbain Grandier was born in 1590 in Bouère, France.
Grandier served as priest in the church of Sainte Croix in Loudun in the department of Vienne, France. In 1632 a group of Ursuline nuns accused Granja of allegedly sending a demon possession to them, sending a bouquet of flowers across the monastery wall. This happened shortly after the priest refused to become the tutor of their abode. Grandier was arrested on the personal orders of Cardinal Richelieu and subjected to several interrogations. He was even forced to participate in the ritual of exorcism, aimed at "expelling demons" from nuns. The first trial did not end with anything, and the accused had to be released, but soon he was again captured and tortured. Apparently, the reason for this was not so much the mythical obsession of Ursulines, as much as Richelieu's hatred for the impudent priest. The accused did not admit his guilt and was sentenced to be burned at the stake.
Urbain Grandier openly protested against the policies of Cardinal Richelieu, whom he ridiculed in his satire.
He is known to have had sexual relationships with a number of women, he received the dubious fame of a debauchee.
