His studying at Moscow University was interrupted by the Civil War.
Young Ury served as volunteer in the Red Army: first – in Political Department of the army, then – in Political Department of the Western Front. After being demobilized (1921) he worked in the Committee of Education of the RSFSR, then – in the People Committee of Nationalities. Since 1922 U. Finkel was engaged in education problems in the Committee of Education of the BSSR. During the Great Patriotic War two Ury’s daughters, father, brother, and sisters died. From 1949 to 1953 he lived in Rakau, taught Russin literature in the local school, wrote research on Belarussian, Russian and Jewish literature.
He began publishing his works in 1918 (first publications are unknown). His story “Looking For Ivan Kupala” U. Finkel wrote in the memory of Janka Kupala. He translated from Russian the story “Grave Of Unknown Soldier” by V. Lidin. U. Finkel made friends with Z. Byadulya, was acquainted with K. Chorny (K. Chornywrote about this in his “Diary”). Ury Finkel started to organize the Museum of Local Lore attached to a ten-year school in Rakau.
