Utpal Kumar Bhattacharya began his academic journey at Kanailal Vidya Mandir in Chandan Nagore, West Bengal, where he completed his higher secondary education in the science stream between 1981 and 1983. He continued his studies at Chandan Nagore Government College under Burdwan University from 1983 to 1986, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree with Honors in Mathematics. He was awarded the distinction of being the university topper in Mathematics. In 1987, he was selected for the National Scholarship Award and admitted to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, where he earned his Master of Science in Mathematics in 1989. His academic merit was further recognized through his qualification in several national-level competitive exams such as GATE and the TIFR-IISc entrance examination. From 1990 to 1995, he pursued doctoral research at IIT Kharagpur, receiving his PhD in Operations Research. His doctoral work was supported by a prestigious CSIR Research Associateship.
Prof. Bhattacharya has been an integral part of the Indian Institute of Management Indore since 2003, where he is a full-time faculty member in the Operations Management and Quantitative Techniques area. He has taught across various academic programs including the Post Graduate Programme in Management, Executive Post Graduate Programme, and doctoral research programmes. His teaching portfolio includes research-driven courses in decision science, logistics, healthcare management, economic sciences, computer science, and business analytics. He is known for tailoring academic content to the evolving needs of industry and society.
Over the years, he has held several key academic and administrative roles. He has served as Chairman of the Personnel and Purchase Committee for two consecutive terms, Chairman of the OM&QT Area for three consecutive terms, and Chairman of the Academic Associate Committee for more than one term. As a senior faculty member, he has also served as an ex-officio member on various institutional committees and has contributed to faculty recruitment and academic governance as a panelist on numerous selection boards for over two decades.
Prof. Bhattacharya has mentored numerous research scholars and currently supervises three doctoral students, two of whom have recently completed their work, while the third is at the final stage. He is also a long-term mentor to postgraduate management students at IIM Indore and provides academic guidance to members of various professional associations. His reputation as a peer reviewer extends to internationally reputed journals in business, healthcare, and economics. He has also served as a reviewer for the Academy of Management Annual Meeting for the past three years.
In addition to his institutional responsibilities, he has taken part in national and international academic events. He was a member of the organizing committee for the APORS 2009 Conference held in Jaipur, and his case study titled "Advertising Analytics" was shortlisted and presented at the INFORMS Case and Teaching Materials Competition during the INFORMS Annual Meeting in San Francisco in 2014.
Prof. Bhattacharya has consistently demonstrated excellence in academics, research, and service to the professional community. His early achievements include securing top rank in mathematics at Burdwan University and earning a national scholarship. His research career, spanning more than 25 years, is marked by publications in ABDC and high-impact international journals, and by the creation of original, application-focused courses that bridge theory and practice. He has been instrumental in institutional development at IIM Indore through his leadership in core committees and recruitment boards. His ability to integrate mathematical modeling with management practice has made him a respected voice in fields ranging from operations research to healthcare systems and economic planning. He remains a sought-after mentor, consultant, and academic thought leader within India’s management education landscape.
Utpal Bhattacharya married To Mrs Ayatri Bhattacharya. They have one child: Master Utsav Bhattacharya.
He Is Ntse Gold Medalist In 2014,2015,2016, Nstse Gold Medalist In 2015, Imo Silver Medalist In 2014, Imo Bronze Medalist 2017, Imo Second Level 2016 (Prize Winner), 2017. He Has Also Won Several Gold, Silver, Bronze Medals In Various School Level Competitions.
