Uzi Baram is an Israeli former politician, who served as a member of the Knesset between 1977 and 2001 and was Minister of Tourism and Minister of Internal Affairs in the 1990s.
Background
Uzi Baram was born on April 6, 1937, in Jerusalem, Yerushalayim, Israel. His father, Moshe Baram, born in Zdolbuniv in the Russian Empire (today in Ukraine) in 1911, served as Minister of Labour and Minister of Welfare and was a Knesset member for Mapai and the Alignment. His mother, Grazia, was born in Aleppo, Syria.
Uzi Baram grew up in Jerusalem's Nahalat Ahim neighborhood.
Education
Uzi Baram earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and sociology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. During his studies, he was chairman of the Students Union.
Career
Uzi Baram has been active in the Labour Party since his student days and was one of the founders of the Labour Party’s Young Guard and its first Secretary (1966-1970). In 1972-1975 he chaired the Young Leadership Department of the World Zionist Organization. Uzi Baram was Chairman of the Jerusalem branch of the Labour Party (1975-1981) and subsequently served as the Party's Secretary-General (1984-1988). After being elected to the Knesset in 1999 for the One Israel Party, Uzi Baram resigned from his post in 2001.
