Václav Benda was born on August 8, 1946, in Prague, Czechoslovakia (nowadays the Czech Republic). Son of Václav and Jirina (Kupcová) Benda. He was a prominent dissident against the communist rule (spokesman for Charter 77) and was imprisoned. After the Velvet Revolution, he served in the Czech senate from 1996 until he died in 1999.
