Before World War I, became known as an orthodox Marxist literary critic, praised by Lenin himself. Active
Bolshevik Party member, 1903, taking part in many party meetings and congresses. After the February Revolution 1917, appointed head of the Bolshevik office abroad (based in Stockholm).
After November 1917, Soviet Ambassador to Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Ambassador to Italy, 1921. Concluded the Soviet-Italian trade agreement, May 1922, and prepared the Soviet-German Rapallo Treaty, 1922.
