Vaidyanatha Subrahmanyan graduated from Madras University. He did his Doctor of Science from University of London in 1927.
Vaidyanatha Subrahmanyan was professor at department of Biochemistry of Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore in 1927-1948; planning officer and director at Central Food Technological Research Institute in Mysore in 1948; CSIR Emeritus Scientist; FAO Food Technologist in Philippines in 1964-1966; advise at Subsidiary Foods and Nutrition, Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Community Development and Cooperation, New Delhi in 1966-1969; also project-coordinator and director at Paddy Processing Centre, Tiruvaroor, Tamil Nadu in 1969-1979.
Vaidyanatha Subrahmanyan wrote about 500 articles and research papers. Subrahmanyan’s researches spanned biochemistry, food processing and nutrition.
Under his stewardship at Central Food Technological Research Institute, a great deal of the work was done in such areas as processing of cereals, pulses, oilseeds and buffalo milk, and preservation of fruits, vegetables and fish.
During 1968-1969, Subrahmanyan helped start a paddy-processing research center. Subrahmanyan was Founder Member of the Society of Biological Chemists (India) and also served as Member, INSA Council (1938, 1952-1954 and 1959-1960). He organized the Central Food Technological Research Institute and developed it as one of the largest and best equipped research institutions in the country.
He was a fellow at Royal Institute of Chemistry in London, National Institute of Sciences of India, Institute of Chemistry and member of Indian Science Congress Association (Past-President, Chemistry Section) and many Govt. of India Committees.
