Debasish Haldar was born on March 30, 1976, in Krishnachandrapur, India; the son of Sanjit Kumar and Ahaladi Haldar.
Haldar received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Calcutta in 1997. Two years later he earned his Master of Science degree in Chemistry from the same university. In 2005, Debasish was given a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Jadavpur University.
Haldar began his career as an assistant teacher of chemistry at Sarisha High School in 2000. Five years later he became a postdoctoral fellow at European Institute of Chemistry and Biology. Then in 2006, Debasish took the same position at the University of Manchester. Also, he served as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Wurzburg from 2007 to 2008.
In 2008, Haldar was appointed an assistant professor of chemistry at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Kolkata. Then in 2013, he became an associate professor at that university. Since 2018 Debasish has been a professor of chemistry at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Kolkata. In addition, he was a visiting professor at the University of Duisburg-Essen, University of Regensburg and the University of Chemnitz.

2012On April 1, 2006 Debasish Haldar married Sudeshna Haldar.
