1903 first story, Melkiy sluchay (A Minor Incident), published in journal Razvlecheniye. In various works described suburban life. Story V gospitale (in Hospital) (1911) reflects 1905 revol.
Greatly influenced by his correspondence and contacts with Gorky and his acquaintance with Veresaycv, Tolstoy, Teleshov and Serafimovich. In 1930's wrote historical novels.
