Valerie Hobbs was born on April 18, 1941 in Metuchen, New Jersey, United States, in the family of Herbert Trevor Evans and Alise (Hansen) Minney.
Valerie received Bachelor of Arts at University of California in 1968, and then Master of Arts there in 1978.
In 1971 - 1974 Valerie worked as a high school English teacher in Oahu, Hawaii, United States. For many years Hobbs taught at the University of California, Santa Barbara, while also writing her books. More recently she has cut down on her teaching duties in order to have more time to work on novels. She also enjoys meeting students at seminars and school visits.
Valerie belongs to the Democratic Party.
In 1962 Valerie married Gary Johnson, but they divorced in 1973. Then she married Jack Hobbs on June 18, 1978. She has a daughter from her first marriage Juliet Johnson.
