Background

Valerie Ng was born in 1974 in Malaysia.

Education

Valerie Ng studied at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia from 1993 and received her Bachelor of Computing in Computer Science in 1995.

In 2001 she studied the Introduction to Graphic Design, Short Course at the Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design (now Central Saint Martins), London, United Kingdom. In 2002 Valerie Ng attended the Alternative Foundation in Fine Art at The Slade Summer School, The Slade School of Fine Art, the University College of London, United Kingdom.

Valerie Ng also attended the Summer Painting Workshop at The Art Students League of New York, United States in 2009.

Besides, she completed the Summer Painting Course of the Ox-Bow School of Art in Saugatuck, Michigan, United States in 2013.

Career

Valerie Ng has been working as an Internet Developer (Web Design) since 1996.

She started painting seriously in 2002, and has since done residencies in the United States, Iceland and Finland. Valerie Ng worked as a manager and designer of Papier Pte Ltd, handmade paper store, from 2003 to 2005. From 2006 she is a freelance visual arts trainer of Arts Workshops including for SCYA, Lescalier, instinc, People's Association Singapore, UNDP Malaysia.

Valerie Ng works mainly in oil on canvas or acrylic on paper, with paintings in an abstract expressionist style. They are created as a result of her explorations in colour, light, depth, form and texture, as well as inspired by the natural elements, hues and shapes in the environment. Valerie Ng strives for a quiet balance with a sense of mood and movement on the surface, through a unique transfer of energy in the action of painting. Having a keen interest in paper and craft, her art objects also include artist books, papier-mache and collage pieces.

Her paintings have been exhibited at the Singapore Art Museum as well as the National Art Gallery, Malaysia. She has had solo exhibitions at the Substation, Maya, Mulan and Wetterling Teo Gallery, as well as group exhibitions at Instinc, Telok Kurau Studios and Jendela Gallery at the Esplanade. In addition, her works have been auctioned by Larasati Auctioneers in Singapore. Besides, some of her works currently belong to corporate and private collections in Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States, Mexico, Sweden and Germany.

Valerie Ng is currently based in Singapore.

Achievements

• Valerie Ng won First Prize in the Abstract medium category, United Overseas Bank (UOB) Painting of the Year 2004 Competition (Singapore) as well as Highly-Commended awards in 2006. She has also received a Distinction in the Malaysian Art Competition in 2007 and been selected for the Young Contemporaries 2006 in Malaysia.

Valerie Ng seeks inspiration in the natural and organic. Her artworks are a clear reflection of this; often reminding one of the visual texture of tree barks, or the lines winds form on surfaces.
