In 1962 Van Coufoudakis received a Bachelor of Arts degree in public administration from the American University of Beirut. In 1964 he obtained a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Michigan and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in political science in 1972.
From 1962 to 1964 Van Coufoudakis was a research assistant at the Institute of Public Administration at the University of Michigan, a teaching fellow in department of political science from 1964 to 1966, and a counselor in School of Arts and Sciences from 1966 to 1967.
From 1967 to 1972 Coufoudakis was a lecturer at Indiana University-Purdue University, an assistant professor from 1972 to 1977, an associate professor from 1977 to 1985, a director of Indiana University Center for Global Studies from 1981 to 1987, a professor in 1985, an assistant dean of the faculty from 1986 to 1987, an associate vice chancellor of academic affairs from 1986 to 1996, the interim dean of School of Business and Management Sciences from 1993 to 1994, an interim dean of School of Education from 1994 to 1995, and became a dean of School of Arts and Sciences in 1996.

2005Van Coufoudakis is a member of the International Studies Association and Modern Greek Studies Association.
On December 26, 1964 Van Coufoudakis married Marion Mason. They have a daughter, Helen.
