Vanek Karel was born on March 28, 1887 in Kostelec Nad Cernymi Lesy, Czech Republic.
For many years Vanek Karel worked in the communist newspaper Rude Pravo (Prague), where he published feuilletons, satirical and humorous works. Shortly after the death of Yaroslav Gashek (January 1923), Vanek on request of the publisher A. Syneka continued and completed the unfinished novel by the author about the adventures of Shvejk, and then wrote the novel " The Brave Soldier Švejk in Captivity ", which was twice translated in Russian (Moscow, Leningrad, 1928, St. Petersburg, 1993).
