Improvised from the age of 10. After graduating from school, 1923, worked as an accompanist and improviser with clubs, studios of artistic gymnastics and for radio. Musical training at the Leningrad Central Technical School for Music, 1929-1931.
At the Leningrad Conservatory from 1931, graduated, 1936. During World War II, at the head of the Iastrebok Theatre of Miniature at the Kalinin front, 1942. Participated in artistic productions at munition factories, 1943, and with divisions of the Krasnoznamennyi Baltic fleet, 194445.
In Leningrad from 1944. Concentrated on composition with intervals for concerts of his own works and guest performances. Wrote operettas, music for ballets, and over 400 songs.
