Spent his childhood in the Caucasus, living with his father under campaign conditions. Toured Russia and much of Europe. Later described his travels in numerous fiction works and ethnographical studies.
1877-1878 war correspondent during Russo-Turkish War. 1904-1905 war correspondent during Russo-Japanese war. 1914-1918 war correspondent during World War 1.
Wrote many novels about the Caucasian and Russo-Turkish War. Also wrote stories, novels, collected verse (1882) and his memoirs of Nekrasov. From 1921 lived in Czechoslovakia.
