Vasiliy Yakovlevich Bogucharski (real surname Yakovlev) was born on February 20, 1860, in Boguchar, Voronezh, Russian Federation in the family of an official, a small nobleman.
At the age of twelve, Vasiliy Yakovlevich enrolled in the Mikhailovsky Voronezh Cadet Corps, which he graduated in 1879. Here he first participated in revolutionary circles. In the same year, the young man entered the Konstantinovsky artillery school. Then he kept in touch with Narodnaya Volya.
At the end of his study in 1880, in the interests of the party, Vasiliy Yakovlevich asked for an appointment to serve in Eastern Siberia. He became the senior cornet in the Cossack troops of the Amur Regiment. In 1883 he retired.
In 1884 Vasiliy Yakovlevich returned to Petersburg (now Saint Petersburg). In the autumn of the same year, he was exiled to Siberia because of contact with Narodnaya Volya military circles. Then he was sent to Yakutia for participating in the protest (until 1890). Vasiliy Yakovlevich was editor in Sibirskiy listok. He began to collect materials on the history of the Russian liberation movement in Siberia.
In 1893-1894, Vasiliy Yakovlevich participated in the organizational activities of Narodnaya Volya. In the mid-1890s, he published in many metropolitan newspapers and magazines. He joined the legal Marxists in the outcome of the dispute between Marxists and Narodniks, and since 1897 he had participated in the Marxist monthly Novoe Slovo.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Vasiliy Yakovlevich appeared in some magazines with articles on the history of Russian social thought. In 1906-1907, together with Pavel Shchegolev and Vladimir Burtsev, he published the magazines Byloe, dedicated to the history of the revolutionary movement.
In 1895 Vasiliy Yakovlevich married Emilia Ventseslavovna Pokorni. The young family lived periods in Voronezh and Moscow. Since 1896, he was allowed permanent residence in Moscow. Since 1897, he was allowed to live in Saint Petersburg, however, Vasiliy Yakovlevich spent most of his time in Voronezh.
