Vasily Sumarev was born on December 7, 1938, in Minsk, BSSR (present-day Minsk, Belarus). He is a son of Fedor Sumarev and Marfa Sumareva.
Vasily graduated from the Belarusian State Academy of Arts in 1965. There, his mentors included Mai Dantsig and Ivan Ahremchik.
During the period from 1965 till 1990, Sumarev held the post of a head of children's folk art studio at the House of Culture of Textile Workers in Minsk (present-day Minsk City Palace of Culture).
Currently, Vasily lives and works in his own workshop in Minsk.
Vasily Sumarev is a well-known Belarusian painter, who became famous for his works, such as "My house" (1970), "The night, when the cactus started to bloom" (1975) and "The story about Novogrudok" (1976).
In 1981, the painter was named an Honored Artist of the BSSR. Also, he received the Order of Francysk Skaryna from Alexander Grigoryevich Lukashenko, President of Belarus, on February 1, 2013.
Today, his works are kept in the collections of several museums, including the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus, the Museum of Modern Art in Minsk, as well as in the funds of the Belarusian Union of Artists and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Belarus. Also, some of his works are held in the exhibition association "Central House of Artists" in Moscow.
In his oeuvre, Vasily Sumarev relies not only on the experience of Plastic arts. His works also contain elements of theatre and folklore. In general, the artist tries to follow the traditions of Realism.
Vasily is married to Natalia Sumareva, who is a teacher of Russian language and literature. They gave birth to two daughters, Ekaterina and Daria, both painters. Also, Vasily and Natalia have several grandchildren, including Zakhar Kopach, Artemy Kopach and Marijka Sumareva. Viktor Kopach, a renowned Belarusian sculptor, is Vasily and Natalia's son-in-law.
