In 1931 Vasily Grigorievich graduated from the Pedagogical Faculty of the Nizhny Novgorod State University. He also finished his postgraduate study at the Voronezh State Pedagogical Institute in 1934, where he defended his thesis on the Russian antinihilistic novel of the XIX century (1936).
In 1934-1945 Bazanov was engaged in scientific and pedagogical work in Petrozavodsk. Since 1945 he was a doctoral student, senior research scientist. In 1966-1976 he was the director of the Institute of Russian Literature of the USSR Academy of Sciences (Leningrad). And in 1958-1969 Vasily Grigorievich was the Editor-in-Chief of the magazine Russian Literature.
