He served as chief of staff of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief (1916-1917). Commander-in-Chief of the Western Front (March-May 1917).
His family owned estates in Voronezh (the village of Sukhie Gai near Verkhnyaya Khava) and Nizhnedevitskoye (Soldatskoe village) Governorate, which were acquired by General-Field-Marshal I.V. Gurko
