Vello Hubel

Background

Vello was born in 1927, in Estonia. Son of Gustav and Hilda (Künkmann) Hubel. He arrived in Canada in 1947.

Education

Degree in industrial design, Ontario College of Art, Toronto, 1955;

student summer sessions, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1962, 71, 73.

Career

Designer metal industries, small appliances, store fixtures, 1955-1958;

design consultant, Vell Hubel Designs, Toronto, since 1958;

teacher design, Ontario College of Art, Toronto, 1965-1993;

associate chairman, Ontario College of Art, Toronto, 1982-1990;

department head industrial design, Ontario College of Art, Toronto, 1990-1993. Consultant various projects including hovercraft, plastic products, bathtubs, wire products, furniture, electric products and exhibitions. Initiator, coordinator design-based symposia.

Chairman theme committee International Congress of Socs. of Industrial Design, Montreal, 1967. Consultant federal, Ontario and Manitoba goverments.
