Education
Vera Rushforth Irwin attended State Normal School (now State University of New York at New Paltz) from 1930 to 1933 and received her Bachelor of Arts (1937) and Master of Arts degrees (1947) from New York University. She also did graduate study at the University of Colorado (1940), Columbia University (1942) and the Institute of Advanced Studies in Theatre Arts (1955-1965).
Career
Vera Rushforth Irwin began her career as a teacher at Carmel High School, Carmel, New York (1933-1937) and as director and English teacher at Croton-Harmon High School, Croton-on-Hudson, New York (1937-1947). She joined the faculty of the State University of New York College at New Paltz (now State University of New York at New Paltz) as an assistant professor in 1947 and was promoted up the ranks to full professor of theatre arts and dramatic literature in 1969, a position she retained through the rest of her career.
Irwin served as chairman of the department of theatre arts from 1969. She edited 1972’s Four Classical Asian Plays in Modem Translation. She received a Ford fellowship (1955-1956) from the Institute for Advanced Study in Theatre Arts scholarship (1962).
